polyureapolyurethane

Guide 04 / APP

Application and equipment

The chemistry decides the tools. Fast setting systems need equipment that heats, meters and mixes at the gun, while slower polyurethanes can go on with a roller.

Plural component rigs

A proportioner pumps the A and B sides at a set ratio, heats them and sends them through heated hoses to an impingement gun that mixes them at the tip. Rigs are usually built into a trailer or truck with a generator and air supply.

Simpler setups

Many polyurethane coatings and some slower polyurea related products can be rolled, brushed or sprayed with an airless unit. Mixing ratios and pot life on the data sheet still apply.

Preparing the surface

Clean, dry and profiled surfaces are the starting point. Concrete is ground or shot blasted and often primed. Steel is blasted to the profile the data sheet calls for. Moisture testing on concrete helps avoid blisters.

Safety

Isocyanates can cause breathing problems and sensitization. Spray work calls for supplied air or the respirator named on the safety data sheet, full skin protection, ventilation and a clear exclusion zone.

Do

  • Calibrate ratio and temperature daily
  • Keep spare gun parts on the rig
  • Mask and protect nearby surfaces
  • Record batch numbers

Avoid

  • Spraying off ratio
  • Cold material in the lines
  • Weak ventilation indoors
  • Skipping the safety data sheet
